Lykta is a small app, so this page is most of the manual.

Using it

Click the lantern in the menu bar to turn Lykta on or off. Right-click (or Control-click) opens the menu.

A lit lantern means your Mac will stay awake. An unlit one means it can sleep normally.

In the menu you can choose a duration — indefinitely, 15 or 30 minutes, 1, 2 or 5 hours. With a duration set, the countdown appears next to the icon and Lykta turns itself off when it reaches zero. The duration you last chose is the one a single click uses.

My Mac still went to sleep

Check that the lantern is lit — an unlit icon means Lykta is off.

Lykta only prevents sleep caused by inactivity. Closing the lid, choosing Sleep from the Apple menu, or a critically low battery will still put your Mac to sleep, by design.

To confirm Lykta is doing its job, open Terminal and run pmset -g assertions | grep Lykta. You should see two lines while it is on.

The screen goes dark anyway

Turn on “Keep the display on” in the menu. Without it, Lykta keeps the system awake but lets the display sleep normally.

“Open at Login” stopped working

macOS remembers the app by its location. If you moved Lykta after enabling the option, uncheck it and check it again from its new home. Keeping the app in /Applications avoids this.

Requirements

macOS 13 or later. Universal binary — runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
